dare ramsmallrug Abuse Resistance Education - DARE Program

This year, across the county, more than 25 million children will benefit from D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). The Summit County Deputies from the Summit County Sheriff's Office have taught the D.A.R.E. program since 1991. This program is offered to over 6000 children in six school districts and nine parochial schools each year.

dare4Currently, the Summit County Sheriff's Office provides five different instructional programs from Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. The Sheriff's Office also provides S.I.D.N.E, Distracted /Impaired driving, Drug- Awareness, and Net Smartz training to high schools throughout the county. Veteran deputies are assigned to teach the programs. These deputies bring their experience and commitment into the classroom, instructing children in ways to resist peer pressure and to live productive drug and violence-free lives. The deputies are proud to present these high quality educational programs to the children of Summit County.

To date, more than fifty independent evaluations have shown that students learn to resist drugs and violence through the D.A.R.E. curriculum. D.A.R.E. not only provides practical tools to help kids remain drug-free, but also qualified and credible instructors who make an impact. In a recent study done in California, kids reported that in addition to their parents, D.A.R.E. officers were the greatest influence on their decision not to use illegal substances. Ninety-five percent of the students believed that the D.A.R.E. program had influenced their decision not to use.

The success of D.A.R.E. is founded upon officers who love to work with kids. Results of studies of recent drug prevention effort programs demonstrate that we are making a difference. The 1999 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse found that overall drug use among young people (ages 12-17) was down 13 percent from the prior year.

Led by successful programs like D.A.R.E., we can build on this momentum and create a brighter, healthier future for our nation one child at a time.
